The holiday season is underway in downtown Portland.
A 75-foot tall Douglas fir, donated by Stimson Lumber Company and transported by Redmond Heavy Hauling, made its way through the city streets at around 10 a.m. on Friday.
After its arrival in Pioneer Courthouse Square, the tree was unloaded and trimmed before being lifted with a crane and secured near the center of the square. Onlookers recorded the process on their phones, marveled at the scale of the operation and received miniature candy canes from "Lumberjack Santa," who had accompanied the tree on its journey downtown.
The annual tree lighting ceremony, which will be the square's 37th, will take place on Friday, Nov. 26 at 6 p.m. Instead of an in-person event, the celebration will be virtual this year and broadcast live on KGW in an effort to keep the public safe as the coronavirus pandemic continues.
