The Power Rangers are getting their own extended universe, spanning new films and TV series, and now we know where it's going to stream. According to a report from Deadline, that reboot that was revealed a little over a year ago is apparently a go go (we're sorry) over at Netflix.
Per the article, eOne Television is planning a shared universe of films and TV shows based on the popular franchise from the '90s for the streaming giant. Jonathan Entwistle of The End of the F***ing World and I Am Not Okay with This fame is still on board to develop the project, which was set up at Netflix a few months ago. And according to eOne global television president Michael Lombardo, it won't be "just one show," but more along the lines of the Marvel Cinematic Universe or The CW's Arrowverse.
"Since we set up Power Rangers with Jonathan, we pitched really a whole-world approach," Lombardo told the media outlet. "It's not just one show, it is shows followed by films, some kids' programming. We have found a great writing partner for him, they are off. Knock on wood, Netflix is excited, we're excited, we hope to have some news soon."
Originally launched in the early 1990's, the Power Rangers have grown into a massive sci-fi action franchise in the decades since, encompassing more than 20 different reinventions and versions over the years, focusing on everything from the classic dinosaurs, to magical powers, time travel and space adventures. A big-screen reboot was attempted in 2017, which gave the franchise a bit more of a grounded, gritty vibe and new origin story — though it seems that continuity has been abandoned for another refresh with this new connected universe.
No word on which direction eOne might take this new-look, super-universe of Power Rangers, but looking back at the franchise's expansive lore and reinventions, there are plenty of options to spin off various teams or stories — all while setting up some big Arrowverse-style crossovers and events down the line. With a big chunk of these projects housed at Netflix, it should also make it easier to keep track of the story as it jumps from TV, to movies and presumably back again.
Entwistle had previously been looking to develop a Power Rangers movie for Paramount, but the project has since grown in scope and ambition after it was brought under the wing of eOne. This Power Rangers Extended Universe (or whatever it ends up being called) is one of multiple projects eOne is currently working on, including that animated Magic: The Gathering series starring Brandon Routh (also for Netflix), a series based on Dungeons & Dragons, and a bunch of shows adapted from Hasbro games (such as a game show based on Monopoly, a scripted series based on Risk and an animated series based on Clue).
